Living room Wittstock

Ideas competition for city planning and generation-friendly living in Wittstock/Dosse

Location: 16909 Wittstock/Dosse

Year: 2011

Awarding body: Europan

¯I Postcard of Wittstock - Come Visit!
Image IFUB* I¯
Despite the good geographical location between Hamburg, Berlin, and Rostock, Wittstock/Dosse has suffered from population declines for years, in particular due to the fall of the textile industry. By carefully identifying and strengthening the districts existing qualities, as well as targeting and addressing its shortcomings, the course can be set for a new

sustainable development

and positive future.

¯I Urban structure
Logo: IFUB* I¯
The current

urban structure

consists of the medieval city center with ancient city walls which is surrounded by a green zone, continuing outwards with small-scale residential developments, commercial areas, and allotment gardens.
_I

¯I City Center
Logo: IFUB* I¯
The

city center

is upgraded with modern in-fill and stronger linkage networks to outside areas. Visual and tactile guides direct the visitor into the city.
_I

¯I Green zone
Logo: IFUB* I¯
The

Green Zone

will be expanded and the river landscapes integrated. The

outer city

area acts as a buffer for changes in population development.

¯I Infrastructure
Logo: IFUB* I¯
The concept for the new

Infrastructure

is based on three pillars: development of the regional cycle paths, reduction of traffic in the city center via centralized parking outside the city’s core, an extension of bypass roads, and upgrading of the old train station as a new center for tourism.

As an example, restoration measures for the city center at the redevelopment area Werderstraße and the adjacent city block, were illustrated. A major goal is to establish an

appreciation of public space.

_I
I_
¯I Share Space
Official Logo I¯

Share Space

is the foundation of a conceptual planning system in which traffic-dominated public street space is rendered more ‘liveable’. The basic idea is to move away from the typical over-regulation (Schilderwald) of today's public urban spaces – a system that has little or no positive effects on the safety or quality of urban space.

¯I Current Urban Spaces
Logo: IFUB* I¯
Currently, the planning of

urban spaces

in Wittstock/Dosse is orientated around the optimal functioning of car traffic, which diminishes the quality of stay for visitors and residents.
_I
I_
¯I Reducing restrictions
Logo: IFUB* I¯
As a first step,

reducing restrictions

in the city center gives all users in the public area equal rights. Space is given back to the people without completely eradicating the possibilities and benefits of motorized transport.
_I
I_
¯I Freeing Road Space
Logo: IFUB* I¯
In the second step, the provision of parking areas outside the city center for visitors and development of parking spaces on the properties of residents will free up

road space.

¯I Living room city
Logo: IFUB* I¯
The goal is more space and a better quality of life for all! The

city becomes a living space.

In the Werderstraße area, existing vacant lots will be used to test the new concept with

generation-friendly housing.

The central multi-generational house, situated with its own forecourt in the square, becomes the new meeting place.
_I
I_
¯I Urban furnishing
Logo: IFUB* I¯
In order to create efficient zoning between peaceful and bustling areas, measures in

urban furnishing and greening

will be implemented.
_I

¯I Extending street space
Logo: IFUB* I¯
One feature of the Wittstock typology is the

extensions of street space

into small squares scattered throughout the city. These become germ cells within the new urban plans.
_I
I_
¯I Typology of the square
Logo: IFUB* I¯
Particularly striking is the typology of the small square in the area of

special developments,

which, along with the new buildings in the Werderstraße, can be used for the multi-generation house.

¯I Living room street
Logo: IFUB* I¯
Another special feature here is the connection with the ‘Share Space.’ Not only are all apartments accessible from the street via their own entrances, but they also invite people to use the street-oriented dining areas and benches that have been integrated into the façades. The

street becomes the living room.
